Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), is a
complex, long-term illness characterized by extreme fatigue that is not improved with rest.
Research suggests a strong connection between CFS and nervous system dysregulation.
Nervous System Dysregulation
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a key role in regulating energy, stress response,
and recovery. In people with CFS, the ANS often shifts into a chronic 'fight-or-flight' state,
making it difficult for the body to return to 'rest-and-digest.' This dysregulation contributes to
fatigue, poor sleep, and heightened sensitivity to stressors.
Key Symptoms of CFS with Nervous System Involvement
Persistent fatigue unrelieved by rest
Post-exertional malaise (worsening of symptoms after activity)
Sleep disturbances
Brain fog, poor concentration, memory problems
Dizziness, lightheadedness, or POTS-like symptoms
Heightened pain sensitivity and immune dysfunction
Holistic Healing Approaches
Healing from CFS requires a whole-person approach that addresses both body and mind.
Some supportive practices include:
- Nervous System Regulation: Breathwork, meditation, gentle somatic practices
- Energy Pacing: Balancing activity and rest to avoid crashes
- Sleep Support: Creating consistent sleep routines
- Nutrition: Anti-inflammatory, balanced diet
- Nature & Mind-Body Practices: Grounding, yoga, forest bathing
In my holistic nervous system program, we weave together vagal toning practices,
breath-based tools, grounding techniques, and self-care rituals designed to calm the body,
support repair, and help regulate the autonomic nervous system. These practices provide a
pathway out of survival mode, giving your body the chance to heal and restore energy.
